If you're looking for an affordable and central corner of Berlin for a budget vacation, the district of Wedding a good choice in a central part of Berlin. The district gets its name from a 12th century nobleman, Rudolf de Weddinge, who farmed this part of the city on the banks of the Panke River. By the 1800s, it was an area of ill-repute and gambling until it evolved into a working class area when industry arrived. Today, it is still a working class area, and home to some of interesting attractions. There is a section of the Berlin Wall that has been rebuilt here, near Bernauer Straße, which was once the end of a tunnel dug underneath the Wall. There is also a nearby museum which outlines the events that took place here during the height of the cold war. While this is a less affluent area, it is also home to a vibrant arts community. A Berlin hotel in Wedding will be a budget choice, close by a number of lively cafés and galleries. There are also a number of excellent ethnic restaurants to be found throughout the district.
