Once an old fortress town built where the Spree and Havel rivers meet, Spandau was amalgamated into Berlin in 1920. An important trade town since the 1100s, today Spandau is one of the twelve boroughs that make up Berlin. It is the most western part of Berlin, and it is the least populated. A Spandau hotel is an affordable and quiet option for travellers, with the feel of a small town. Right in the heart of Spandau, the Spandau Citadel is one of the highlights of the district, looking down over the town and the Havel River. There is also Fort Hahneburg nearby, which was also built to protect the town in the 16th century. A Berlin hotel in Spandau will put you close to the Altstadt Spandau, or the Old Town, which is the most charming part of this district. Look for a place close to Reformation Square and St Nicholas Church. This area is also popular with people who enjoy hiking and nature walks, being home to the Spandau Forest and the Hasenheide Volkspark, which is a large and lovely green space. While Spandau may be a little further from the city centre, it certainly has plenty of interesting attractions and amenities, and can be an affordable and interesting place to base your Berlin vacation.
