Pergamon Museum General Info
During the years of 1910 and 1930 the Pergamon Museum on Museum Island in Berlin, Germany was built. It is the home to reconstructed monumental buildings of their original size. These include the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the Pergamon Altar, as well as the Market Gate of Miletus. Each of these is built from actual pieces that have been transported from their original places. There are three parts to the Pergamon Museum: Middle East, Islamic art and the antiquity collection. This is one of the most visited art museums in Germany. Before the Pergamon Museum was even opened, it was known that they would not be able to house everything they needed, which brought on the building of the Bode Museum.
During World War II, air raids on Berlin destroyed parts of the Pergamon Museum and luckily many of the objects on display were elsewhere, and what was not able to be transported was walled off to help protect it. In the future there will be an expansion of the Pergamon Museum that will connect to many of the other museums on the island. The Pergamon Museum is a place you will not want to pass a chance to visit while staying in Berlin, at one of the many hotels around the city.
