Berlin Guide
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg General Info
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is the district that is home to the main military crossing point between East and West Berlin before the Reunification at the end of the 20th Century. It is located south of Mitte. The Kreuzberg area of the district was once considered the poorest area in Berlin. It has established itself as one of the cultural centers of the Berlin since the Reunification.
Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has long been known as the home of the punk rock lifestyle of Berlin. It is still a refuge of multicultural life, but has also become a home of some of the nicer establishments in Berlin. This area of the city has the highest population density.
The most famous landmark in the district is the former location of Checkpoint Charlie. It was the only cross used by Allied forces and foreigners. This checkpoint was the most visible and often used in movies. The original guard house and sign were moved to the Allied Museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf. Today there is a copy of the border house in the original location.
The cheap rents of Kreuzberg after the Reunification made the area popular among the younger population. This district is now home to one of the youngest populations in all European neighborhoods.
