The International Memorial for Freedom at the Berlin wall is one of Berlin’s main tourist attractions. The east side of the Berlin wall, near Muelhenstrasse, became an open air gallery after the collapsing of the wall; artists from all over the world have contributed with over 100 paintings to express their idea of a new conquered freedom and their hopes for a better future. Time, graffiti, signatures by tourists, vandalism have somehow ruined and damaged the wall during the years but today, thanks mainly to donations and private sponsors, the East Side Gallery has undergone a restoration aimed at preserving the existing paintings.
