Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf General Info
Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf is the heart of West Berlin. The district is made up of two former districts, each area with distinct attributes.
Charlottenburg is home to the Schloss Charlottenburge, the palace that was commissioned by Queen Sophie in 1695. This area of Berlin grew steadily after World War II. Today it is home to the club scene for much of Berlin, although the alternative crowd tends to lean towards Kreuzberg.
Wilmersdorf has always been home to the middle and upper class residents of the city. It tends to be quieter than the other younger neighborhoods. This southern part of the district is estimated to be home to around 80% of the Jewish population live in this district of the city. The majority of the Jewish community is of Russian decent.
Parking can be difficult and expensive in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Getting around is easiest either with public transportation, or by bike on those fair weather days. It is still one of the best locations for high-end shopping in Berlin.
Olympiastadion was built in this district by Hitler for the 1936 Olympic Games. It is the stadium where Jesse Owens won four gold medals in Track and Field. It was also the home of the FIFA World Cup in 2006.
