The Botanical Garden in Berlin, Germany contains as many as 22,000 plant species. It is one of the many important gardens of the world. It is located in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf borough and was built during the years 1897 through 1910. It was built to hold plants, both native and exotic, so that it was easier to examine and research their many varieties and uses. The inability to expand on the kitchen and herbal garden in the city center also helped move along the creation of the garden. Presently it is owned by the Free University of Berlin. Attached to the garden is the Botanische (Botanical) Museum as well as a scientific library. Many of the Botanical Garden's buildings are glass houses, like the Pavilion Victoria. This pavilion is home to a large variety of carnivorous plants, orchids, and the giant white water lily, Victoria-Seerosen. There are over 6,000 square meters of glass house to look through, 13 hectares of open air buildings, and a 14 hectare Arboretum, so there is a lot to look through while staying in Berlin, at one of the many hotels around the area. The Great Pavilion is perhaps the most well known glass house, and it is the worlds largest of it's kind. It is the home of many tropical plants, such as the giant bamboo.
