Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) General Info

Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) is one of the two airports that serve the Capital City of Berlin, Germany (a third airport closed operations in 2008). It sits just north of the city limits in the suburb of Tegel. The hexagon shape of the terminal, which was built in the 1960’s, helps to make the airport passenger friendly. The airport offers wireless internet at several locations, but there is a fee. Tegel Airport was built in 1948, and at the time had the longest runway in Europe. Air traffic was limited from 1945 until 1990 into Berlin. Only airlines from the United States, the United Kingdom and France were able to fly into and out of the area.

Up until 1989, Berlin was a city divided by a country divided. These unique circumstances meant that the infrastructure was multiplied by two. Since the city was unified, the goal has been to unify services. Tegel Airport will be one of the tragedies of the blending. It is scheduled to be closed down in 2011 when all of the air traffic will be moved to Schonefeld Airport to the south.
