The Berlin Cathedral or, as they call it the Germans the Berliner Domin English, is located on Museum Island in Berlin. It is a Lutheran cathedral, built between the years 1895 and 1905. It stands before the Leisure Garden and the former Berlin city palace. The cathedral was originally of baroque style, but during the rebuilding, it was restructured to be neoclassical in design. It was considered the Protestant equal to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The building was damaged in an air raid during World War II, which resulted in a temporary roof to help preserve what was left of the Berlin Cathedral. In 1984 the reconstruction of the interior was started, and was opened to the public in 1993. The opening was televised nationwide to the public. The Berlin Cathedral is home to an 113 stop pipe organ, with three rows of 32 foot pipes. During the 1984 reconstruction, the pipe organ was also fully restored even though the building had a lower ceiling. The Berlin Cathedral is definitely a good place to visit while staying at a hotel in the surrounding Berlin area. It is quite a sight to see, no matter what religion, ethnicity, or background you come from! While visiting the cathedral, you may want to check out the rest of Museum Island.
