About Berlin

city centerBerlin spent years as one of the most controversial cities in the world, but now, culture, history, art, and much more welcome tourists from across the globe to this astonishing city. Searching for a hotel in Berlin will yield many results of varying styles. From resorts and villas, bed and breakfasts to hostels, there is a perfect hotel for in Berlin for every taste and every budget.

For nearly 30 years, Berlin was divided by the Berlin Wall, a division erected to separate NATO-allied West Germany from socialist East Germany. After its fall in 1989, Berlin grew into one Europe’s best travel destinations, undergoing major changes and finding a way to let the past and the present live together in peace. The capital of Germany, Berlin has a youthful spirit that has lit the way for the reconstruction of a beautiful city.

Berlin is divided into six districts, but travelers often stick to three major areas while visiting: Mitte, City West, and East Central. Mitte is the historical center of Berlin and contains many of the city’s main sights, including: Alexanderplatz, Pariser Platz, the Berliner Dom, the Reichstag, and the iconic Brandenburg Gate. Mitte is also home to Museum Island, located in the Spree River, which houses world-class museums including the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, and the Pergamon Museum.

City West is known for its shopping and restaurants in addition to sights like the Olympic Stadium, Tiergarten and the famous Berlin Zoo, as well as Charlottenburg Palace. East Central is a busy area of Berlin, with lots of cafés, bars, shops, and the East Side Gallery, the largest stretch of the Berlin Wall still standing which has since been painted with beautiful murals. If the history of the Berlin Wall is of particular interest to you, be sure to check out the Berlin Wall Memorial in the Mitte neighborhood.

Aside from its history, one of Berlin’s biggest attractions is its nightlife. Home to about 200 dance clubs, Berlin leads Europe in the club scene, attracting techo music fans to dance along with some of the world’s biggest DJs. Areas big on nightlife are in the east section of the city, including Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and Prenzlauer Berg.

Visitors looking to explore all of Berlin’s wonderful history and storied sights should stay in Mitte, but there are also plenty of accommodations in City West.
