Zbraslav Chateau General Info

Founded in 1292 by King Wenceslas II, the Zbraslev Chateau began as a Cistercian Monastery. Originally dubbed the Aula Regia (Kings’ hall), it was intended to be the final resting place of the Bohemian kings. Many of the members of the Premislid royal family were buried there during the 14th century. Unfortunately, the Zbraslav monastery, and the tombs of the royals were destroyed in 1420 by the Hussites. It was not until the 18th century that the complex was rebuilt in the Baroque Style, and then renovated once again in 1910 to the chateau-style appearance that it retains today.

Since reopening to the public after yet another series of renovations in 1998, the Zbraslav Chateau is now a stop for tourists that wish to see old-world architecture, and revisit some of the history of the Czech Republic. A portion of the Chateau has also been reserved for the Czech National Gallery for the arts since 1939, and currently is home to an extensive exhibition of Asian art, from Japan to Turkey and all areas between.
