Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of Bohemia, gives the name to this long square (750 meters) in the heart of Prague which is the centre of business, culture and shopping in the New Town. In the square and close to it you will find offices, stores, fast-foods, hotels, shops, money exchanges and so on. Demonstrations have often taken place in this square: for instance Nazis rallies or the famous episode of the student Jan Palach who set himself on fire in 1969 in this square as a protest against the Soviet Invasion that took place the previous year. Landmarks of the square are: the statue of saint Wenceslas and the National Museum.
