Wallenstein Palace

The Wallenstein Palace is a Baroque-style structure built in the early 1600’s by Italian architect Andrea Spezza. The interior design is heavily influenced by Italian design, with frescoes and stuccoes depicting scenes from Roman mythology. While the palace is elaborate and captivating, perhaps the most impressive views are seen in the Wallenstein Garden, where the old-world charm comes to life in the statuary and complex hedge work nestled in between the walls of the palace wings. The Wallenstein Garden is filled with many statues and fountains depicting the feats of the Gods from Greek mythology, while there is a man-made grotto designed to look like the inside of an ancient cave. Exotic birds fill the aviary, and ducks float aimlessly on the garden’s lush pond. At the center of the pond is a small island with a statue of Hercules. Every element of the garden is superbly maintained, and neatly manicured, giving the sense of what it must have been like when royalty walked the halls of this palace, or strolled through the gardens discussing matters of state. This is truly a peaceful spot in the middle of Prague that is open to all to experience.
