Tyn Cathedral

The Tyn Cathedral (original name Church of Our Lady in front of Tyn) is a perfect example of a Romanesque and early Gothic period church, built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style, it was renovated and embellished in the Gothic style over the next two centuries, with its final Southern tower being completed in 1511. While the architecture is reflective of predominantly Gothic styling, particularly with the elaborate and expansive vaulted ceilings throughout, the artwork of the interior pulls its inspiration from the pre-Hussite period of artisans. Located in the center of the Old Town Square of Prague, the Tyn Cathedral now contains the headstone of Tycho de Brahe, Danish astronomer and towers above Prague as a shining example of three-aisle Gothic church design. The twin steeples on its monumental façade climb to 80m high, and can be seen from nearly anywhere in Old Town Square. The Tyn Cathedral is still a functional religious establishment and Sunday service is your best opportunity to see the inside of this tremendous artistic achievement if you are so inclined. Be sure to check with the locals in Prague for the time that the service begins and be sure to go early to take it all in.
