The Slavonic Island

The Slovansky Ostrov, also known as either The Slavonic Island or the Zofin Island, is a beautiful little island set in the midst of the great Vltava River that courses through the center of Prague. While there are many vantage points to see the Vltava from its banks, the Slovansky Ostrov has the unique appeal of allowing you to see the river as its wraps around the island. There are sweeping views of both sides of the river from the island, and you can see the National Theater clearly from the shores of the isle. On the island itself is the beautiful neo-Renaissance styled Zofin Palace, which is still used today as a venue for some of the important social and cultural events that are held for the citizens of Prague. There is also a fine arts gallery called the Manes Exhibition Hall which is a space intended to display works of art that span all of the forms of visual art from sculpture to photography and everything in between. Throughout the island are a number of walking paths, and the feel of the island is quite calm and tranquil, it is a perfect spot to sit on a bench and enjoy the fresh air, or to take a lovely walk and enjoy the scenery.
