Strahov Monastery

Like many of the structures Of Prague, the Strahov Monastery has gone through much iteration before arriving at the way that it looks today. It was originally built in 1140, mostly from wooden materials, but in the following century much of the infrastructure was remodeled in the Romanesque style with stone and marble. It was rebuilt in the Gothic style after a fire destroyed the most of its buildings in the early 13th century. It was again rebuilt, this time in the Baroque style, in the late 17th century, which is the form that it currently retains. The most talked about aspect of the Strahov Monastery, and the big draw for visitors, is the immense library that is home to a collection of well over 16,000 volumes of literary work. There is also an extensive art gallery that is arguably one of the finest private collections of paintings and sculpture in Central Europe, and contains works by great Bohemian and Baroque period artists such as J.J.Heinsh, K. Skreta, and J.J. Hering. Some of the most famous works include the Strahov Madonna, the Strahov Altarpiece, and the Death of the Virgin Mary. There is also an organ played by Mozart himself during a visit to the Strahov Church in 1787.
