Stone Bell House

The Stone Bell House is the last of the town palaces built in the 13th century to still maintain its original Gothic architectural character since its complete modern restoration in the 1960’s, from a Baroque “conversion” in the late 17th century, to its original Gothic origins. It is believed to have been built for King John of Luxembourg in the mid-1300’s, and contains not one, but two chapels within its storied walls, and is a centerpiece of history in the heart of the Old Town Square of Prague. The “Stone Bell” for which the house is named, still stands in the corner of the palace, and is believed to be symbolic of the bell that was rung in 1310 to signal the peaceable entry of the soldiers of the King of Luxembourg into Old Town Prague. Today, the Stone Bell House belongs to the City Gallery Prague, and is one of the premier venues for classical music concerts and modern and contemporary art exhibitions, from performances by the Vivaldi Orchestra Praga, to period paintings from modern surrealists, to installations from today’s influential modern and contemporary artists; the Stone Bell House is a fixture in the Old Town Square, and an integral part of the art world of modern day Prague.
