Pinkas Synagogue

Named for the original rabbi of the synagogue when it was established in the early 16th century, the Pinkas Synagogue is one of the historical Jewish buildings of the Jewish quarter of Prague. The building itself was originally founded by Aaron Meshullam Horowitz, and today is the gateway into the old Jewish Cemetary. In the late 1950’s, the Pinkas Synagogue became a shrine to the Czech Holocaust victims, and the names of the nearly 78,000 victims were etched on its walls. Unfortunately, after the conflict with Israel during 1967, the communist government of former Czecholovakia removed the names from its walls. However, after the fall of communism in 1989, and the creation of the Czech Republic, the names were all added back to the walls of the Pinkas Synagogue, and remain there today. As with most synagogues, the building is simple but elegant, and the Pinkas Synagogue is a fine example of this type of worship site, and since you are likely in the Jewish quarter to see some of the history of Judaism in Prague, you will be satisfied with your stop into this historic location.
