Emauzy Monastery

Prague has many buildings that were built during Charles IV’s reign, and one of these gifts to Prague is the Emauzy Monastery. The Benedictine monastery was established in 1347, and was originally built to celebrate the mass in Old Slavonic, and the intent was to bring the largely Germanic controlled religion to the Slavic masses. He twin steeples of the church at the monastery are symbolic of the New Town, and are a striking feature of the Prague skyline. The church itself was severely damaged during the Second World War, but has since been fully restored to its current state of nearly perfect repair. Visitors to the church will find that it is a terrific example of Gothic architecture, despite the fact that most of it has been rebuilt from new materials. Because the monastery began as an attempt to bridge the gap between the Roman Catholic church, and the local traditions of Old Slavonic liturgy, the damage to the church during WWII was lessened. The Emauzy Monastery, though damaged, was not completely destroyed and in fact, the damage that was suffered was caused by an errant Allied fire-bombing.
