(中文: 厦门) Xiamen, China, may be one of the most non-Chinese cities you will find. Actually located on an island, it was a popular location for non-Chinese foreigners to live and work. Perhaps better known by the Fujian name of Amoy, there still seems to be a lot left over from the colonial days of Xiamen. Xiamen and its surrounding countryside have a population of nearly 5 million and is famous for being an ancestral home to overseas Chinese. Named as China’s second most livable city, it was named one of China’s Special Economic Zones (a zone where the economic laws are less strict). Because of the cities status as a Special Economic Zone travelers will find it cheaper to visit than some other parts of China. The old quarter has narrow streets and has the best colonial-era architecture than anywhere else on Mainland China. Because of Xiamen’s past as one of the first Chinese cities opened for foreigners to live upon there are several old consulates. One of these is the old British consulate built in 1843 — it is the oldest foreign building on Xiamen. Today called the Jinquan Qianbi Bowuguan, the old British consulate houses a remarkable coin collection and is a wonderful lookout for the rest of Xiamen. There are several beautiful beaches to visit and they lead to a collection of beautiful old foreign mansions. You will see old gun emplacements, one that was credited with sinking a Japanese ship in 1937, and of course tons of souvenir shops. Xiamen is a wonderful place to visit and we will help you decide what to see and where to go first!
