Renowned for its modern architecture and rich in its tapestries of historical culture, Shanghai is by far one of the most interesting cities to visit. Though any holiday is not complete without a trip down the shopping districts of the city and in Shanghai, this street is the Nanjing Road.
Even though Shanghai is filled with high rise towers that have retail spaces and malls inside, the Nanjing Road is in the city’s centre and is one of the world’s busiest shopping destinations attracting almost a million tourists and shoppers per day. Nanjing Road runs approximately 6km from west to east, starting from the Huangpu River, to The Bund, to the People’s Square and finally continues to the Jing’an District. Along this busy shopping street, you will find cafes, the electronic and digital media shopping area and towards the west you will find Nanjing Road’s Pedestrian Mall. The Pedestrian Mall on Nanjing Road is where you find the Shanghai’s largest department stores, a diverse mix of domestic retail outlets and also some very traditional restaurants and tea houses that have been in this location for years.
For more luxurious and international first class brands such as the much loved Louis Vuitton and Gucci labels, the West Nanjing Road is where you will find them. On west Nanjing Road there are many up-market high fashion shopping malls, exclusive retail outlets and a number of office buildings. Nanjing Road offers shoppers retail outlets ranging from domestic brands, international brands, to expensive fashion brands – all on the same road.
Visitors travelling to Shanghai during holiday seasons such as Chinese New Year, New Year’s Eve, Christmas and Easter, be sure to visit Nanjing Road as these festive days are usually celebrated along this road. Public transport to the Nanjing Road is also readily available, with one of the metro lines running along the Nanjing Road.
