Shanghai is definitely one of the most festive and amazing cities in the world today. The financial hub of China, home to many of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, Shanghai is full of exciting treasures on every street and road. A city of luxury, high fashion and exclusive brands, Shanghai possesses a rich elegant aura that will be a dream to any shopper.
However, the Huangpu River, or literally translated to mean “Yellow Bank River”, would have to be the heart of Shanghai, holding everything together and giving Shanghai the elegance it emits. The Huangpu River extends for more than 110 kilometers or 68 miles, which starts from the Dianshan Lake to its intersection with the Yangtze River. The Huangpu River gives life to the Shanghai metropolis as it provides most of the city’s drinking water and is also the home of The Bund, dubbed as the “World’s Architecture Fair”.
On the east of the Huangpu River is Pudong, the financial hub of China and home to many of the famous buildings. On the West of the Huangpu River is Puxi. To escape the constant traffic of Shanghai, ferries, cruises, barges, junk and sampans can be used to get across the river, or for a chance to experience Shanghai from a different perspective. There is also an underground walkway that is underneath the Huangpu River. Though, beware of beggars and hawkers while walking along the Huangpu River. It is highly recommended that tourists do not give any money to any beggars as very quickly you will be surrounded by a whole clan of them.
At night the Huangpu River glistens as the city and its skyscrapers and monuments light up and colorful rays of light hit the rivers gentle waves. There are also ferries and special Huangpu River cruises that run at night just to allow tourists and visitors a chance to have a truly breathtaking experience.
