The Forbidden City is located at the heart of Beijing and is the largest royal palace complex in the world. Built in the early 15th century as the central ruling palace for the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, The Forbidden City is an impressive feat of architectural achievement that is arguably the finest royal palace ever created. The legend of The Forbidden City tells of over one million workers being required to construct this enormous complex over nearly 10,000 rooms, and spanning an area of 74 hectares within its city walls. The city is often referred to as the Palace Museum, and many of its areas are open to the public and tourists. It would be wise to plan for an extended visit when coming to The Forbidden City, as it is truly expansive and there are very many places and sights to be seen within its walls. While some tours attempt to pack all of the city into a couple of hours, you may want to look around for tours that take you into more areas to get the full experience. You should also plan to spend some time exploring The Forbidden City on your own, as there are many opportunities to find some of your own sights.
