It is just a few kilometers from Italy by traveling over a glacier and 62 kilometers southeast of Gstaad. The town of Zermatt is small with only abut 5,500 people living there, but the population varies quite a lot because of the tourists that come and go, some staying a long as they can before they go back home. Before Zermatt became a popular tourist destination for skiing and other winter activities, it was primarily an agricultural community. The town was discovered by a British mountaineer that made the village of Zermatt a worldwide sensation. The first tip you will want to know about Zermatt is that May is not the time of the year that would be best suited for a vacation in Zermatt. This is when the construction season begins, so there will be a lot of large trucks that bury the roads in mud. But if you show up at the right time in Zermatt, you will be able to enjoy the local shops, restaurants, and bars. If you come in the summer, there are also many street parties and large community events that bring the whole village together in celebration. Come in August to enjoy the Steinmatte and stay until the Winkelmatten in September. Besides parties, what else can you do in Zermatt? There are many opportunities to ski the surrounding mountains. You can hop on one of the cable cars and head up all the way to Klein Matterhorn, where you will feel like you are on the top of the world from the spectacular view that you will get. There are several different trails that you can follow, al varying in difficulty. So whether you are a beginner or an expert, you can still ski the best in Zermatt. In the summer, you can hike the mountains of Zermatt and take the Maute Route that eventually leads to Chamonix, France. Whether you come in the summer or the winter, you will be able to reach new heights in Zermatt.
