Christmas in Amsterdam is a season of tradition and celebration, no matter what your religious beliefs. Amsterdam hotels are often full, so be certain to reserve ahead. The Amsterdam Christmas holiday season starts in the middle of November when Sinterklaas and Zwarte Pieten (Sinterklaas’ Black Peters) arrive.
Tradition is that the Black Peters take the naughty kids to Spain, but in reality they pass out cookies and candy to the children. On the eve of December 5th, the children put their boots by the fireplace, and wake to find them filled with sweets, and families gather on this day to exchange gifts and eat lavish meals. The Dutch also cater to visitors who celebrate the Anglo-American Christmas, but most stores and restaurants remain open.
Museumplein becomes a Christmas Square each year, with an ice rink, lights, a Christmas market, and craft displays. Close to many Amsterdam hotels, the Red Light District seems to never close, and is decorated splendidly for the holidays as well. Beautiful seasonal concerts around town are offered by many of the churches, and most museums and zoos will be open on Christmas day. Hungry travelers will find most restaurants and cafes open, and the Comedy Café and Holland Casino open as well.
