Union Square, Bryant Park, and St. Bartholomew’s have holiday markets throughout the season. With New York hotels located in all the convenient locations, travelers are never more than a brisk walk or subway ride from all the attractions. There are outdoor ice rinks at Rockefeller Center, at the American Museum of Natural History, and Wollman Ice Rink, a free Holiday Train Show at Grand Central, and the Wild Holiday Party for kids at the Central Park Zoo. You can even see the Waterford crystal ball that will be dropped in Time’s Square on New Year’s Eve if you make a trip to Macy’s at Herald Square. Hotels in New York are often full for the Christmas Holiday season, so plan ahead of time and reserve the space you need. Christmas music is everywhere, from the Brooklyn Bridge Christmas Eve Bargemusic Concert, to Lincoln Center, to The Cloisters. Radio City Music Hall hosts the annual Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, Lincoln Center hosts The Nutcracker. Children’s Mass and Midnight Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral are packed full, and tickets are necessary. Window shopping on 5th Avenue is magical, and Little Italy’s holiday decorations are a sight to behold. Cocoa from Bottega Del Vino on 59th St. is the best, and you are just across the street from a carriage ride through the park.
Times Square is packed with over a million people, no matter what the weather is like, and for that one night, truly seems to be the “center of the world.”  The six foot 1000 pound crystal ball is lowered while up to a billion people around the world hold their collective breaths and the clock strikes midnight, and fireworks and confetti blanket the area. Spending your Christmas Holidays in New York it could be a very special experience.

Christmas in Paris

Christmas in Paris means even fancier French pastries and chocolates are made and put on display.  Fresh oysters are often served with Champagne at the outdoor cafes, and chocolate-makers fill their windows with delicious displays. Paris hotels decorate beautifully for the season and will gladly point travelers in the direction of the Christmas Markets.  Markets are located at the end of the avenue des Champs-Elysees, called the Marche de Noel, at the Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Place Saint-Sulpice. The latter two are ten minutes apart on the Left Bank, surrounding the churches they are known for, Located 10 minutes walking distance from one another, in the heart of the Left Bank, these two churches are surrounded by traditional Christmas markets with holiday arts and crafts, and food specialties from all of France. Holiday window displays are extravagant at Le Printemps and food stores Fauchon and Hediard.  There are outdoor skating rinks in front of the Paris Hotel de Ville, and in front of the Montparnasse train station. Ask your hotel in Paris which patisseries has the best “Buche de Noel” and be sure to get one, and some Christmas tea at one of the Mariage Freres tea rooms. Le Grande Roue is a big ferris wheel in town for the holidays, with great views of Paris. Midnight mass is very special at Notre Dame Cathedral, with its nativity on Ile de la Cite, an island in the middle of the river Seine.
