Christmas Holidays in Prague

prague-christmas

Prague is a beautiful city to spend the Christmas Holidays in. Visitors suggest it resembles the Victorian Christmas scenes that are often seen on cards and other holiday printing. Nicknamed the Golden City, Prague’s famous outdoor Christmas markets are some of the best in the world and shouldn’t be missed if staying in a hotel in Prague. Old Town Square hosts the biggest and most impressive market, but there are casual neighborhood ones along Namesti Miru in Vinohrady. Prague Castle presents a live nativity scene in the 3rd Courtyard on the two days following Christmas. Close to many Prague hotels, there is great ice skating in the center of Prague behind the Estate Theater until January.

Christmas in Paris

Christmas in Paris means even fancier French pastries and chocolates are made and put on display.  Fresh oysters are often served with Champagne at the outdoor cafes, and chocolate-makers fill their windows with delicious displays. Paris hotels decorate beautifully for the season and will gladly point travelers in the direction of the Christmas Markets.  Markets are located at the end of the avenue des Champs-Elysees, called the Marche de Noel, at the Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Place Saint-Sulpice. The latter two are ten minutes apart on the Left Bank, surrounding the churches they are known for, Located 10 minutes walking distance from one another, in the heart of the Left Bank, these two churches are surrounded by traditional Christmas markets with holiday arts and crafts, and food specialties from all of France. Holiday window displays are extravagant at Le Printemps and food stores Fauchon and Hediard.  There are outdoor skating rinks in front of the Paris Hotel de Ville, and in front of the Montparnasse train station. Ask your hotel in Paris which patisseries has the best “Buche de Noel” and be sure to get one, and some Christmas tea at one of the Mariage Freres tea rooms. Le Grande Roue is a big ferris wheel in town for the holidays, with great views of Paris. Midnight mass is very special at Notre Dame Cathedral, with its nativity on Ile de la Cite, an island in the middle of the river Seine.

Prague Christmas Markets

For two months, from November to January, Prague comes fully alive with its annual Christmas Market, which draws an unbelievable number of international tourists and locals together in the city every single year.
The markets run daily throughout this time from 9am-7pm, and allow you to peruse hundreds of stalls, mainly located in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, selling hand made and traditional Christmas and festive fare, including gifts, decorations and locally produced food.
There are many hotels near the Prague Christmas Market, situated around the main squares, and they often become fully booked during the festive season so may require booking well in advance.  Prague hotels are often as well lit with fairy lights as the squares and parks themselves, and it truly is a magical experience to visit the Prague Christmas Market and stay in the local vicinity, where you can purchase mulled wine and hot chocolate from the street vendors and enjoy the winter wonderland the event turns Prague into.
