Bruges Hotels
BrugesVisiting Bruges is like going back in time. This Belgian city, which is only about an hour away from Brussels by train, is in the heart of Flemish country, and is arguably the most fantastically well-preserved city of historical Flanders. Flemish influences are everywhere, from the architecture to the layout of this medieval city. It is a quaint town, with a population of only about 115,000 people, and is sometimes referred to as “The Venice of the North” because of all of the canals, which crisscross the city. In fact, this city has been so well preserved, and is considered to have such historical value that it was recently declared a UNESCO world heritage site. For architecture fans, there is the Church of Our Lady, which has one of the world’s highest brick structures (the spire is about 133 feet tall). The sculpture Madonna and Child, contained in this church, is popularly believed to be the only sculpture by Michelangelo which left Italy during his lifetime. There are of course museums everywhere, including the Memling and the Groeninge, which focus on Flemish history and Art, and even a museum dedicated to the making and history of lace! Belgian chocolate is famous the world over, and Bruges is home to an annual chocolate festival, with a walking tour that will take you to chocolate shops all over the city. And, although Bruges is a proper historical city with significant culture and architecture, don’t be fooled for it has a lively nightlife and club scene. There are pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, and nightclubs, something for everyone. Antiques shops rub shoulders with modern galleries in a charming mix of the old with the new. There isn’t a spot in Bruges that wouldn’t make a lovely photograph, it is picturesque and photogenic from every angle, with it’s sparkling canals, cobbled streets, and 13th century architecture. There is just an aura of history come to life in Bruges.
