St. Stephen's Cathedral General Info
St. Stephen's Cathedral or Stephansdom is the most important religious building in Vienna, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna. It has a Gothic and Romanesque design, and sits on the ruins of two previous churches. This cathedral is one of the most easily recognizable symbols in the city. World War II almost brought the cathedral's destruction but the German captain, Gerhard Klinkicht, ignored orders from the city commandant to use artillery to bring the building down. However, the roof collapsed due to fire that had spread from plunderers setting fire to nearby shops. There was little damage to anything important on the inside due to the brick shelves everything was under. It was fully reopened in 1952.
St. Stephen's Cathedral (in German Stephansdom) is built of limestone and stands 136 meters at its tallest point. Originally white, pollution has left soot all over the building, turning it black. Recently there have been restoration projects to bring it back to its original majesty. This beautiful cathedral is something not to be missed during a visit to Vienna, Austria.
