The Museum of Art History / Fine Arts (Kunsthistorisches Museum) is the home to one of the most important collections of art worldwide. The building was finished in 1891, and restoration began in the beginning of the 1990s. The museum was created to be a counterpart to the art galleries in Amsterdam and London. There are eight parts to the museum. The main building contains the Egyptian and Oriental collections, as well as a collection of Antiquities, one of Paintings, coins, and sculpture and applied arts. The most highly viewed portions are the Oriental and Egyptian collections as well as the collection of paintings. The museum has collections found elsewhere, such as the Waffensammlung (weapons collection) and Ephesos museum, in der Neuen Burg. The main exhibition has 51 rooms and is located in the Maria Theresien Platz.
Renaissance tapestries are held within this museum as well. The collection is one of the largest of its kind. There are several hundred portraits from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. The Museum of Art History / Fine Arts is definitely worth your time when visiting Vienna. If you are staying at a hotel near the museum, there is no reason why you should not look upon this vast collection of story-filled art.
