Karlskirche General Info
In 1713, when the plague was ravaging Austria, a vow was made by Emperor Charles VI that he would build a church, and in 1737 the Karlskirche Church was finally completed in Vienna and dedicated to St Charles Barromeo, one of the saints often prayed to during the plague. The vast Baroque building that in 1738 was given to the Knights of Malta, stands 262 feet long and 200 feet wide. The dome rises to an impressive height of 235 ft, over a tall central oval area, between four small corner chapels in the corners and two major side chapels. The pillars depict scenes from the life of St Charles Borromeo, each of which stand 110 feet high, and are adorned with the Imperial Crown at the points.
Ever June through September there is live music performances, and the chapel still holds traditional services. Hotels and other amenities, including restaurants and other necessities are never far away from such a cultural and historical building. Aside from services, the architecture and art alone is enough to draw thousands of national and international visitors every month. The spacious interior of the Karlskirche Church in Vienna is dominated by the frescoes on the massive dome, as well as from the organ case and high altar.
