Innsbruck: Innsbruck, Austria, is a charming city with an almost village like quality, due in part to its population (approximately 200,000), in part to its courteous citizens, and in part to its geography; it occupies a small valley in the Tyrolean Alps, and has had very little done in the way of modern construction. It is a sportsman’s (or woman’s) dream, with world class skiing in the winter, and some of the best mountaineering in the world in the summer. Of course, in addition to those very strenuous activities, there is also hiking of the regular variety, where you can simply shoulder a backpack with a meal inside, and strike out for the mountains. Innsbruck (which literally means “bridge over the inn”) was home to the winter Olympics twice, in 1964 and 1976. It is a city built around its annual festivals, whether it’s the classical music festival in the summer, or the Christmas festival in the winter, and there are parks and gardens all over the city. There are museums, churches, the Palace and its extensive grounds, a world famous market, and even a zoo. In spite of its small size, Innsbruck is used to having travelers from around the world, and has a modern cosmopolitan atmosphere to go along with its old world charm. It has developed quite a night life for the young adventurers who are lured there year after year, and, even in the Altstadt (old city), there are night clubs, pubs, bistros, and cafes to while away the night time hours. You can find a lively sidewalk cafe, have a hot chocolate, and just watch the world go by. The entire city is ringed by the Alps, and there is a beautiful view no matter which way you look.
