Dubai: Dubai (sometimes called Dubai City to distinguish it from the Emirate state of the same name) lies along the western coast of a peninsula that juts out into the Persian Gulf. It is unusual among the United Arab Emirates in that only a very small percentage (approximately 5%) of its annual revenue comes from oil and oil related commerce. No messing around here, people, Dubai is all about the shopping. It is a worldwide Mecca to shoppers from as far away as Canada and Australia. In fact, its main annual festival is a shopping festival, a veritable smorgasbord of buying to be had, of anything under the sun. Of course, given its location, it does have some spectacular beaches and it’s slowly building up a glamorous image as a vacation destination, with nightlife and some excellent golf courses. Some very beautiful and avant-garde architecture has created some spectacular hotels, some of which are only accessible by helicopter. And speaking of helicopters, there are helicopter tours available, so you can see from the air the amazing, modern cityscape being created in Dubai. There is a state of the art aquarium, called the Dolphinarium, and the Palm Islands, man made land formations in the shapes of palm trees that jut out into the indigo blue water. These land forms, the largest created by man, can supposedly be seen from the moon! But let’s get back to the shopping. Dubai has “souks”, which is the Arabic word for “marketplace”, where anything can be bought - think giant flea market crossed with brand name boutiques and you’ll be close to what the atmosphere is like. Of course, there are traditional department stores as well, but no negotiating there. If regular shopping isn’t enough, then you must visit Dubai during January, when they have their annual shopping festival - it’s as though the entire country turns into one giant shopping mall/swap meet. And when you tire of shopping, you can hit the Beach or go play a round of golf!
